Trekking Through Sri Lanka’s Most Beautiful Tea Plantations – The Ceylon Tea Trails

📍 From Ella, Haputale & Bandarawela

No trip to Sri Lanka is complete without exploring the iconic tea plantations of the central highlands. This full-day trekking experience takes you deep into the heart of the island’s hill country, along the serene and scenic Ceylon Tea Trails – a region often called the most beautiful part of Sri Lanka.

You’ll walk for 5 to 6 hours through lush, rolling hills and misty tea estates, led by a local guide. Along the way, you’ll meet cheerful tea pluckers in colorful attire, learn about traditional tea picking techniques, and even try plucking tea yourself – “two leaves and a bud!”

Enjoy a picnic among the tea bushes, far from the tourist crowd, and soak in uninterrupted views of panoramic landscapes and rural village life. This is a truly authentic Sri Lankan experience that combines nature, culture, and peaceful adventure.

🌿 Trekking Through Thangamale Bird Sanctuary

📍 From Ella, Haputale & Bandarawela

In the morning, we start the tour from Haputale, meeting at the Haputale Railway Station. From there, we transfer by tuk-tuk or minivan to the starting point of our forest walk.

This trek takes you through the peaceful Thangamale Bird Sanctuary, perfect for bird lovers and anyone who enjoys quiet natural surroundings. Walking through pine forest, eucalyptus groves, rainforest, and tea plantations, you’ll experience the untouched beauty of Sri Lanka’s hill country.

On a clear day, you’ll enjoy stunning views of both north and south. One unique part of the trek includes walking along a railway line, passing through a tunnel and small station — a true local experience.

We’ll stop for a picnic with a panoramic view, and you’ll have the chance to visit remote tea estate villages, meet local families and children, and even try picking tea alongside the tea pluckers.

This forest walk is often described by travelers as one of the most beautiful treks in Sri Lanka. We finish the journey at Ohiya Railway Station, where you can catch the train back to Haputale or Ella.

Trekking to Sri Lanka’s Highest Waterfall
Via Devil’s Staircase & Tea Plantations

📍 From Ella, Haputale & Bandarawela

Start your adventure with a scenic train ride from Ella, Haputale, or Bandarawela to Ohiya – one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Sri Lanka. From Ohiya begins a challenging but rewarding 16 km hike through breathtaking mountain paths, lush tea plantations, and remote villages.

This trek is one of the most iconic hikes in the country and leads you to the majestic Bambarakanda Falls, the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka at 246 meters high.

Along the way, you’ll trek through rugged trails with spectacular panoramic views, explore local tea estate villages, meet friendly villagers and school children, and even stop to try tea plucking with plantation workers.

One thrilling part of the trail includes the dramatic “Devil’s Staircase” — a narrow track with steep slopes and hairpin bends offering stunning views across the highlands.

We continue through the forest to the hidden and serene Lanka Falls, a perfect spot for a refreshing swim and picnic lunch in a natural pool, away from the crowds. After relaxing, we hike further down to Bambarakanda Falls, where you can visit the base of the waterfall and take in its full glory — and even have another swim if you’d like!

This is a full-day hike (approx. 6 hours) and not recommended for beginners, but every step is filled with adventure, beauty, and a true connection to Sri Lanka’s heartland.

🏞️ Trekking to Ella Rock – Via Ravana Cave & Village

📍 From Ella, Haputale & Bandarawela

Explore one of the most iconic hikes in Sri Lanka — Ella Rock — on a unique and scenic trail that goes beyond the typical tourist route. Starting from Heeloya Railway Station, this trek takes you through peaceful villages, vegetable farms, forest trails, and local life before reaching the summit.

Ella Rock is a towering cliff about 1,400 meters above sea level, offering panoramic views of the Ella Gap, lush tea-covered hills, and the valleys surrounding Badulla. The round trip is around 8 km and takes about 4 hours, including breaks and time to soak in the views.

Unlike the standard trail, we guide you on a more authentic route, experiencing the everyday life of village communities, hiking through plantations and forests, and learning about the local way of life along the way.

At the top of Ella Rock, enjoy a picnic lunch packed for you — rest, take photos, and breathe in the fresh mountain air. After your break, we descend the mountain through a hidden path to the Ravana Cave and temple, full of local legend and history.

From there, you can choose to walk or take a local bus back to Ella town or visit Rawana Falls for a final scenic stop.

Glorious Tea Walk to Lipton’s Seat & Tea Factory Visit

No visit to Sri Lanka is complete without exploring the island’s world-famous tea country. This trek is not just a scenic walk — it’s an immersive journey into the heart of Ceylon tea culture, beginning with a hike through lush, panoramic tea plantations and ending with a guided visit to one of the country’s most historic tea factories.

  • 3–4 hour tea trail through some of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful plantations
  • Hike through rolling hills, misty valleys, and scenic viewpoints
  • Experience daily life of tea pluckers, and join them in picking “two leaves and a bud”

  • Reach the legendary Lipton’s Seat, where Sir Thomas Lipton once watched over his estate

🍃 Tea Factory Visit – Dambatenne Tea Factory

After the trek, visit the historic Dambatenne Tea Factory, built in 1890 by Sir Thomas Lipton.
On the factory tour, you’ll learn about the entire tea production process — from fresh green leaves to the final golden cup. Discover how tea is fermented, rolled, dried, and graded, and enjoy a fresh cup of Ceylon tea at the end.

Single Tree Hill & Highest Village Trek to Nanu Oya

Start your day with a refreshing highland adventure as we hike up Single Tree Hill, one of the best viewpoints above Nuwara Eliya. We’ll meet you in the morning at your hotel and begin the trek through lush tea plantationsvegetable farms, and quiet village paths.

As you climb the winding trails, enjoy panoramic views over Lake Gregory, Nuwara Eliya town, and Sri Lanka’s rolling tea-covered hills. This area, located in the heart of Ceylon tea country, is known for its cool climate and scenic beauty.

Along the way, walk through remote villages, meet friendly locals, and observe tea pluckers at work. You’ll even have the chance to join them in picking tea leaves — a hands-on way to appreciate the tea you’ve sipped all your life.

We’ll also walk alongside a section of the railway track, pass a few small waterfalls, and enjoy the peacefulness of the hills, away from busy tourist routes.

The trek ends at Nanu Oya Railway Station, where we’ll arrange transport back to Nuwara Eliya.
